At the beginning of WWII, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invade Poland. Sixteen- year- old Czesia travels two hundred kilometers to Kolno to help her aunt Jadwiga and her cousins move back home. Before they can return, the Germans in a secret treaty hand over the town to the Soviet Army who ban all travel. Soviets seize Polish homes and deport families to Siberian gulags. Czesia embarks on a journey of humiliation, hunger and suffering which lasts for years.
Based on true events, this disturbing and yet heart-warming story of survival illustrates both noble and evil deeds of people who are faced with desperation and danger.
The book describes my mother's experiences in Siberia and Iran during WWII, addressing what the Soviets did to Poland and its people.
